A bitch had a fantasmic Thanksgiving feast of yummy Turducken, corn casserole, collard greens, cake, pie, cookies and vodka followed by cran! A bitch was so overcome with satiation that my ass passed out and missed a post-Thanksgiving gathering.
Fuck it, a bitch couldn’t move!
Anyhoo, my ass hopes that everyone had a good holiday...unless you are Swedish, in which case you don’t have a Thanksgiving gorge feast…or maybe you do, like a harvest festival of greedy mass consumption. A bitch will have to look it up. Canadians have their own Thanksgiving…this bitch hopes it includes Smarties.
This bitch has jury duty tomorrow. A bitch was so obsessed with the Turducken that my ass totally forgot about it. Being a true believer in the jury system, this bitch shall report for duty promptly at 8am! Posting will be delayed tomorrow!
May Gawd have mercy on the court…
This bitch was going to post about all manner of things, but a report on CNN about evolution versus intelligent design followed by the 60 Minutes report that just went off on the Bush administration's battle against Plan B settled this bitch on the issue of religion and government in America.
Perfect timing, since most of the country just sat down and stuffed ourselves in a traditional festival celebrating the fact that early settlers…fleeing the oppressive politicized religious states of Europe…managed to last through the New Year munching on the corn of native people.
This fucking debate pisses me off more that 24/7 holiday music on the radio! What the fuck has become of us? Are we so cocky…so certain that we know it all...that we would revert into the very society that so disgusted our founders that they fucking hopped on a boat and set off to FUCKING NOWHERE…ANYWHERE…FUCK IT, THEY WOULD RATHER HAVE DIED THAN SPEND ONE MORE FUCKING DAY STRAINING AGAINST THE YOKE OF…
...the Church as government.
Heaven to hell and back again…
Whatever happened to render until Caesar what is Caesar's and until Gawd what is Gawd's?
After listening to the most ridiculous pseudo-intellectual debate on intelligent design my ass has ever fucking heard followed by a fucking gynecologist from
You may want to sit.
It’s not complex, but it seems profound…that could be the vodka and cran at work, but fuck it…
Because it's easier.
It’s easier to live life as a person of faith when you are not allowed by the law to do that which your faith prohibits. And doesn't that make you a person of laws and little faith?
Catch that knee before it jerks. Spiritual law is easily ignored...otherwise priests would be out of work. We're talking the law of governments and humans.
Think about it.
It’s easier not to pick up a baseball bat and bash an asshole over the head.
It’s easier not the fuck your neighbor’s wife…
It’s easier not to have to guide your children down a righteous path…to not have to instruct them at home because you know someone is taking care of that for you…
It’s easier to not add a chair to your dinner table…to not add a cup of water to that caldron of soup and feed your fellow man or woman…
It’s easier to go to church, or mass or whatever…kneel, stand, kneel, stand…drop some money in the bucket and say fuck it…
It’s easier to see the world as a wondrous place of clearly defined laws and everyone working with them so that they can get their just rewards...on earth? Oh, wait...no, no, no...in heaven! Who can remember? Perhaps this is heaven?
Gets muddy real quick...
It is easier.
But it’s not divine…nor sanctified…nor is it a spiritual accomplishment.
What easier is…is lazy. Intellectually, morally and …yes, spiritually lazy.
Render unto Caesar…
That is the labor so many religious activists have taken up. Taxes, law and order, morality, politics, education, medicine, loyalty, trust, adoration and love.
Is there anything left to render unto the Divine One?
...do they pray to Caesar...
or do they even see the difference anymore?
Ya know, I've thought that very thing but have been too afraid to say it.
I really like the way your thoughts trickle out. Well, not trickle, surge because they are powerful.
Bush has taken things too far! His ideas are ludicrous.
I remember the days when America was such an admired country here in Europe. This was as recent as 10 years ago. People would sigh at the thought of America, the promised land. Now, the mere mention of it brings a sneer to their lips. So sad. All this due to a fucked up conservative government that has hypnotized the masses. They've taken advantage of the good faith of the American people. Americans really do believe and love their country and all it stands for-and they should! They should! That prick Bush just used all this against them. He has ruined the country's image in just a few short years. It's so upsetting. Not to say that all of us over here hate the American people because we don't! We really don't. (Oh, i'm half American from my mother's side also.)
But it's not like the good old days when people longed for America, the land of the free, the home of the brave.....
P.S. Can't wait to hear about your jury duty!
Rock on, ABB!
It's eerie and deeply disturbing to see "patriotism" and love for one's country become the knee-jerk reation, a set, imposed spirituality, on so many of my fellow Americans - or at least those portrayed in a few media interviews, etc.
I have a feeling that actual spiritual faith is, as I believe you are suggesting, *hard*, or at least not the easiest path. It is a constant struggle, be you Buddhist or Christian or Muslim, or someone who does not subscribe to one religious faith, but attempts to lead a caring and moral life. It is much easier to spend your extra cash on a new pair of shoes (hello!) than on feeding someone else.
Anyways, rock on.
I think you're onto something, ABB. I really do.
Our pilgrim foreparents fled the religious repression of England to The Netherlands, not to the colonies. This made a lot of sense. The Netherlands were then as now famously liberal and left everyone alone & it didn't require any help to figure out how to build a living there.
Why then did we wind up in North America? Because the Pilgrims were lunatic-fringe fundamentalists (this also explains why they were persecuted in England) and couldn't stand having their kids turning liberal like the Dutch! Thus they fled after a few years of too much freedom to a New World where they could be free of liberal intelligentsia, and indeed 1/3 of them found themselves free of this sinful planet after freezing to death in the first Winter. Better than having your kids go liberal!
The natives took pity on them after seeing so many deaths, and taught them how to raise local crops. For this the Pilgrims thanked their god, whom they didn't bother to blame for the decision to leave the Netherlands in the first place.
Hey...re:your jury duty...did you hear about the rent charge for Missouri inmates? 1600$/mo...heard it on the news this morning.
Kinda confused since it seems that punishment should not be increased after sentencing...how can they possible charge money to someone serving a sentence...seems cruel and unsual to me...those assholes!
anyway, paz y libertad mujer!
Happy Jury Duty...give 'em hell!!!
As a firm believer in creation/intelligent design, I've gotta say, I completely agree with you. If we're legislated to believe certain things, where does genuine faith actually happen? I think that's what you're trying to say. If not, I totally missed the point.
It's easier to let Papa tell you what to do, no matter who that papa is.
Which is to say that I totally agree.
As with many an issue currently troubling the minority of free-thinkers who have escaped the patriotic dome of mass hypnotism constructed by the evil stupid man and the supreme court of fundamentalist felators and wet nurses of the almighty unborns--your great mind just peels back the layers of uselessness and exposes the real deal, the questions we should ask, the answers we all know. I've only recently discovered your blog and it has become such a valued and astute guide and inspiration. entry after entry prompts the very type of discourse and thought that our leaders had hoped to extinguish some time ago. thank you for stepping up and proving repeatedly that certain minds will not be hushed or driven to complacency by lies and stupidity. easier will never be better. your work is the best writing I've read all year. Not only that, your corn casserole is beyond delicious
I'm with you ABB
To throw my 2 cents in...it always seemed to me that, in looking at the similarities/ differences of the 2 organizations (religious, government) the bottom line should be mode of enforcement. While the subjects addressed often overlap (IE murder, war, poverty, human rights), failure to comply with the organizations policies in a religious institutions are properly met with an act of persuasion. Governments throw your ass in jail (coercion).
And it's not necessarily a bad thing when the two organizations work together, but it IS a bad thing when the religious organizations start asking the government to do their heavy lifting for them (like you say, 'cause its easier).
When the Pastor can't persuade, through inspired words and deeds, the superiority of his moral position he should STFU and move on. If patriotism is the last refuge of the political scoundrel, then politics is the last refuge of a religious scoundrel.
Free-associating here... Funny, you ate turducken (I've secretly wanted to try this myself). I spent Thanksgiving Day (or was it the day after?) watching a show on National Geographic regarding the Flu Epidemic of 1918 (as well as other pleasant things like Ebola). The scientists interviewed were able to trace transmission from the 1918 Flu Epidemic and the Bird Flu scare going on right now seems to mirror the same pattern: 1. Wild fowl get infected; 2. It crosses to domestic fowl; 3. It crosses to humans.
I also heard some comic this weekend refer to a turducken as the "Bird Flu Trifecta."
I know. I know... an audible groan is emitting from my fingers as I type this:)
Me personally? I think it's all part of the scare tactic/terrorism going on right now. Gotta perpetuate the climate of fear we Americans live in/with!
It is easier and they are fearful of what they and their children would do without the law behind their faith. I had a long discussion with my family regarding just what gay marriage does to cheapen heterosexual marriage. I heard many incorrect biblical quotations but the main point was the fear of what their kids would think if society had to accept alternative families. The whole Christian fundamentalist vision comes down to a father-led family where all the decisions are handed down to the rest of the family. Who is the "father" in alternative relationships. Female decisionmaking is seen as inferior. Good Christian chil'ren will get confused if they have to respect non-paternal decisions. My brother in law said if his sons see a same sex marriage it may take their minds off where they are supposed to be headed. I was suprised that they thought sexuality was such a fragile thing. I was sad that once again some ancient book was used to support bigotry.
