I had a long discussion with my family regarding just what gay marriage does to cheapen heterosexual marriage. I heard many incorrect biblical quotations but the main point was the fear of what their kids would think if society had to accept alternative families. The whole Christian fundamentalist vision comes down to a father-led family where all the decisions are handed down to the rest of the family. Who is the "father" in alternative relationships. Female decisionmaking is seen as inferior. Good Christian chil'ren will get confused if they have to respect non-paternal decisions. My brother in law said if his sons see a same sex marriage it may take their minds off where they are supposed to be headed. I was suprised that they thought sexuality was such a fragile thing. I was sad that once again some ancient book was used to support bigotry.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10755833.post-1133317277682707122005-11-29T20:21:00.000-06:002005-11-29T20:21:00.000-06:00Free-associating here... I spent Thanksgiving Day (or was it the day after?) watching a show on National Geographic regarding the Flu Epidemic of 1918 (as well as other pleasant things like Ebola). The scientists interviewed were able to trace transmission from the 1918 Flu Epidemic and the Bird Flu scare going on right now seems to mirror the same pattern: 1. Wild fowl get infected; 2. It crosses to domestic fowl; 3. It crosses to humans.

I also heard some comic this weekend refer to a turducken as the "Bird Flu Trifecta."

I know. I know... an audible groan is emitting from my fingers as I type this:)

Me personally? I think it's all part of the scare tactic/terrorism going on right now. Gotta perpetuate the climate of fear we Americans live in/with!Mavenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06159539883712835177noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10755833.post-1133290230509211182005-11-29T12:50:00.000-06:002005-11-29T12:50:00.000-06:00I'm with you ABBTo throw my 2 cents in...it always...I'm with you ABB
To throw my 2 cents in...it always seemed to me that, in looking at the similarities/ differences of the 2 organizations (religious, government) the bottom line should be mode of enforcement. While the subjects addressed often overlap (IE murder, war, poverty, human rights), failure to comply with the organizations policies in a religious institutions are properly met with an act of persuasion. Governments throw your ass in jail (coercion).
And it's not necessarily a bad thing when the two organizations work together, but it IS a bad thing when the religious organizations start asking the government to do their heavy lifting for them (like you say, 'cause its easier).
When the Pastor can't persuade, through inspired words and deeds, the superiority of his moral position he should STFU and move on. If patriotism is the last refuge of the political scoundrel, then politics is the last refuge of a religious scoundrel.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10755833.post-1133247333825405832005-11-29T00:55:00.000-06:002005-11-29T00:55:00.000-06:00As with many an issue currently troubling the mino...As with many an issue currently troubling the minority of free-thinkers who have escaped the patriotic dome of mass hypnotism constructed by the evil stupid man and the supreme court of fundamentalist felators and wet nurses of the almighty unborns--your great mind just peels back the layers of uselessness and exposes the real deal, the questions we should ask, the answers we all know. I've only recently discovered your blog and it has become such a valued and astute guide and inspiration. entry after entry prompts the very type of discourse and thought that our leaders had hoped to extinguish some time ago. thank you for stepping up and proving repeatedly that certain minds will not be hushed or driven to complacency by lies and stupidity. easier will never be better. your work is the best writing I've read all year. It is a constant struggle, be you Buddhist or Christian or Muslim, or someone who does not subscribe to one religious faith, but attempts to lead a caring and moral life. It is much easier to spend your extra cash on a new pair of shoes (hello!) than on feeding someone else.

Anyways, rock on.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10755833.post-1133185616481287562005-11-28T07:46:00.000-06:002005-11-28T07:46:00.000-06:00I really like the way your thoughts trickle out. His ideas are ludicrous.
I remember the days when America was such an admired country here in Europe. This was as recent as 10 years ago. People would sigh at the thought of America, the promised land. Now, the mere mention of it brings a sneer to their lips. So sad. All this due to a fucked up conservative government that has hypnotized the masses. They've taken advantage of the good faith of the American people. Americans really do believe and love their country and all it stands for-and they should! They should! That prick Bush just used all this against them. He has ruined the country's image in just a few short years. It's so upsetting. Not to say that all of us over here hate the American people because we don't! We really don't. (Oh, i'm half American from my mother's side also.)
But it's not like the good old days when people longed for America, the land of the free, the home of the brave.....

P.S.
