An earthquake has struck Haiti…

A 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti yesterday.

There are reports of widespread destruction and loss of life.

To help – MSNBC.com has a list of organizations providing relief that you can donate to.

If you are searching for information as a relative, the State Department has set up a toll free phone number 1-888-407-4747 (note – you may get a recording due to the large volume of calls.)

Please post links to additional resources and aide organizations in the comments.

Meds and Food for Kids (http://mfkhaiti.org/) is on the MSNBC list you linked, but I wanted to mention for your St. Louis readers that the Meds and Food for Kids founder, Dr. Patricia Wolff, is from St. Louis, and a lot of Washington University doctors and students have volunteered for the organization. They have been helping starving kids in Haiti for years and I'm sure their infrastructure must have taken a big hit. So if you want to donate to a local organization that helps out in Haiti, I would recommend them.

I've heard good things about the Lambi Fund of Haiti, which partners long-term with Haitians for community development projects. Their site is www.lambifund.org.

Partners in Health has long been involved in providing health care to the poor in Haiti. http://www.pih.org/home.html They already have systems in place and are in need of money and medical professionals to assist at their hospitals in Haiti.
