Pondering the Get Over Its...

Let’s jump right in, shall we?

I was reading an article on the protests against Proposition 8 and several comments carried the “You lost – get over it!!” theme in support of Prop. 8.

I can’t even imagine the kind of life that lets a person think rights are decided like a hockey game tied after overtime. I’m thinking a person has to be pretty fucking blessed to feel comfortable with a winner takes all shoot-out. Shit, a bitch isn’t exactly comfortable with that solution during hockey games.

I mean, does that world view have limits?

Would the Get Over Its respond to everything that way?

I can just see them as characters in my new favorite television obsession, Battlestar Galactica.

“We’ve been invaded by Cylons! We lost - let's get over it!!”

Blink.

Anyhoo, this bitch suspects that these Get Over Its are also fans of gradualism. They probably think women would have gotten the vote…eventually. People of color would have gotten civil rights…simply with the passage of time. The Cylons would have come to regret their world domination and leave the humans alone…after a century or two.

Well, my people call that bullshit.

Patience ain’t a virtue in the struggle for equality and this bitch will not be getting over a motherfucking thing.

***logs off to begin marathon viewage of Battlestar Galactica Season Two***

YES!! I am so irritated by the cynical "you people are being so mad and mean and making us uncomfortable" bullshit.

Hope you enjoy the marathon.

I love Col. Tigh and even embarrass myself at Cons taking his photo. :P

(See, most people just go "who?"--but now I can tell you.)

Sometimes I get complacent about how far we've come since the election of Obama, but then people like you remind me of how far we have to go and how fucking backward we really are.

I've said this a couple of times now, but there was a time when the majority of Americans thought it was perfectly fine to own another human being. "Get over it"? Thank heaven we "got over" the problem instead!

I'm still shocked to find out that you're actually Black, so no 'get over it' commentary from me.

Oh! I wish I was back there again, watching episodes of BSG for the first time. Ahh...the thrill!

=New reason to keep loving your blog. I hope we get updates on how you're liking the show.

I have to be honest, I think they're just saying "Get over it" because they're scared and they know (and WE know, and EVERYONE knows) that they are going to be the ultimate "losers" of this "game" sooner or later. It's just a question of when, but they know time is on our side.

So I'm angry as hell, but I'm content to sit here for now with a smug sneer on my face, saying to myself, "Go ahead and laugh and gloat, motherfucker, cuz you and I both know it's a temporary victory."

So...we can tell them to get over it right?

Get over that the power has transferred to another group.

At least I HOPE it's another group...and not just the same group with a different name.

Well, according to Mike Huckabee, we just need to suffer some more!!! I guess after a certain number of murders and/or injuries, LGBT people will magically be ready for those dang civil rights. I just wish Huckabee and the Get-Over-Its would tell us what the magic baseline is (567 murders?, 13.7 years?) so we could plan for a big ole party when we've met those requirements.

No kidding Homer. Seems like after the wipping up of the "the fags are going to rape our children cause my preacher told me so" base we should get there on the murder number faster than ever.

Frederick Douglass got it right: "Those who profess to favor freedom, and yet deprecate agitation, are men [and women] who want crops without plowing up the ground. They want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its waters . . . . Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did, and it never will. Find out just what people will submit to, and you have found out the exact amount of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them . . . ."

Oh, if you like BSG Season 2, just wait until you get to Season 4 (4.0 available on DVD in January...I can't believe they didn't release it in time for me to put under the tree for my husband...)

"Get over it"? I'm glad I haven't heard this one. Fighting oppression is one of our duties, isn't it? As Americans? Grrr.

Now far be it from me to be contrary (What? Oh hush, you), but when the Cylons decimated the Twelve Colonies, there was a point where Adama was gearing up to fight back and President Roslin said to him, "Commander, the war is over. We lost." Of course, that wasn't the end of the story, and in much the same way, this battle may be over, but as long as there are (metaphorical) bullets in the (purely hypothetical) gun, we'll keep blasting away at the (somewhat similar to Cylons) agents of injustice.

Oh, and wait until you get to season three....

I have to agree with joe...fear mongers are themselves afraid...well, those who don't use it as political wedge issues anyway.

Americans took a giant step in getting over fear with the election of Barack Obama as our President and I hope, no pray that we continue down that path.

I think the religious extremists had this psychological expectation that if they passed enough ballot propositions, lesbian, gay, bi, and trans people would shut up and disappear. Just the opposite has happened.

Love the dogs graphic.
