Inauguration Day…

Today is Inauguration Day and millions will watch Mr. Obama take the oath of office and become this nation's 44th President.

And then...then the work begins.

I’ve been watching the network coverage of all things inauguration related…the emotional interviews with attendees, the awkward unscripted ‘oh, shit…we’ve got how many hours of coverage to fill?’ pundit-based blathering and the never-ending wide shots of the stage and the crowds that surround it.

It’s easy to get caught up in the exploration of this moment in history.

But I’m feeling rather serious today. I’m thinking of all the great expectations and daunting challenges that are ahead of us. And I’m ready to be a part of making change happen after the cameras shut down and the crowds go home.

I'm beyond ready to witness historic policy changes and some serious results…after the parades and the balls and the post-event analysis of Mrs. Obama’s dress.

But today we witness history…the transition of power and the responsibility that comes with that power.

And then?

Then the work officially begins.

Our long national nightmare endeth and this bitch hopes we wake up audacious...

I'm also in a somber mood, despite being incredibly glad and relieved that Obama is taking office today.
I feel like the people standing on the wing of that plane in the Hudson: rescue is in sight, the certainty of doom has been lifted, but we're none of us safe, warm, or dry yet.

I am feeling the whole gamut of emotions today.

Its so weird, I have very few memories on which to draw, when I had this level of emotions and the range.

I won't relax until he is sworn it.. I am still scared of something bad happening. It's a knee-jerk reaction for me..I can't help it. I have seen too much in my life NOT to be worried for him.

Just remember, ABB, there will still be so much to be angry about, if you're paying attention.

Otherwise, congrats to your country for a step in the correct ("right" doesn't seem appropriate here) direction.

Watching the inauguration I think everyone felt pretty much the same way. It was a much more sober moment than I was expecting.

I think the word is awe.

And now it's time to roll up our sleeves and get back to work, y'all.

I wasn't aware of the JFK inauguration 48 years ago (being 4 years old), but have heard the speech subsequently, including the one phrase everyone remembers:

"And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country."*

Today, President Obama made a very similar speech, calling Americans to their better nature.

People respond to a challenge. Let us all roll up our sleeves, for we are in this together... Let us make each other proud!

LOL yes, the coverage was getting a bit annoying at times. I was tired of hearing "that shot was great" or whatever crazy shit they were saying so no one was talking.

Yes. I felt serious today too. Almost felt sorry for Shrub and Mrs. Shrub as they slunk off back to Texas.

Almost.

I kept waiting to see a shoe fly.

Inauguration Day. I have let my day unfold at its ease. I shall watch the highlights tonight or tomorrow, but make no mistake - I know what time it is. I am cautiously optimistic about what is ahead. Glad for the change at the reins but I hear "Won't Get Fooled Again" in the back of my brain. I wanna shake hands, not fists. I want us to come out fighting FOR one another instead of between or against. Peace.
