Today is the Back Up Your Birth Control day of action!

Back Up Your Birth Control is a national campaign committed to raising awareness of and expanding access to emergency contraception (EC).

This year's Back Up Your Birth Control Day of Action is especially exciting because it comes on the heels of a federal decision to make EC available over-the-counter to seventeen-year-olds.

Emergency Contraception (EC) is a back-up birth control method, as opposed to a regular birth control method like condoms, hormonal contraception, IUD placement, etc. EC, also known as the “morning after pill” and by the brand name Plan B®, is a safe and effective way to prevent pregnancy AFTER unprotected sex or the failure of other birth control methods. EC is a higher dosage of the same hormones found in many types of regular birth control pills. When used within 5 days (120 hours) of unprotected sex or birth control failure, EC can significantly reduce the risk of unintended pregnancy. EC is most effective when taken as soon as possible after unprotected sex or the failure of other birth control methods. So don’t wait!

Nothing makes us a modern society, allows us to be totally expressive, spiritually free of archaic hang-ups and empowered as human beings like good effective birth control.
Now, if we can just eliminate the right wing ultraconservative morality idiots. . .

I thought it was 72hrs after unprotected sex, now it's 5days? That's great. What people don't understand about the morning after pill is that it isn't an abortion. It doesn't do anything if you are already prego! It helps prevent pregnancy after having unprotected sex. So it's like a cautionary tool. Take so you won't become prego! Needless to say I think EC is perfect! I think it should be available to anyone who needs it........

When I was in college, before Plan B became available OTC, my living group had a team of women who could not be shamed. Every couple of weeks one of us would go to the student health center, get a gym exam, claim to have had a condom break or something like that, and get a dose of Plan B, which we then took home and kept in the medicine cabinet for the benefit of any of our housemates who did not want to go to the med center.

I'm really glad about the decision, but wish the court had ruled that EC should be available to any woman, regardless of age.

Speaking of emergency contraception, on Monday, a judge ordered the FDA to make EC available to 17-year-olds without a prescription.

I live more or less next door to my local Planned Parenthood, which great for two reasons.

One, whenever I need to refill my birth control prescription (can I tell you how much I LOVE the NuvaRing?) I can just pop on over.

Two, whenever the nut cases show up with their signs and their mumbley chanting/praying, I can go over and stand in front of them, look puzzled, and say, "Isn't me having birth control a GOOD thing? So I don't have abortions?" They just ignore me and keep praying. After that I go inside to say hi and give the ladies there some moral support. Hooray for Planned Parenthood!
