I went there as a transfer, (they offered me the best deal of anywhere I applied) & tutored some of those full ride athletes. Most seemed reasonably bright & supposedly didn’t have obvious undiagnosed learning disabilities, & did want to graduate. but I couldn’t think how their high schools had handed them diplomas with some of the glaring gaps in their basic education, but I guess everyone knew sports would roll out red carpet regardless...Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10755833.post-1146564948445680682006-05-02T05:15:00.000-05:002006-05-02T05:15:00.000-05:00You find me a verified example of a low/mid class ...You find me a verified example of a low/mid class white scoring 300 pts higher than midclass black gaining entrance to Ivy League, and I can assure you the midclass black had other outstanding attributes that put him over the white.

BTW, these ficticous, imaginary scenarios are getting you nowhere.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10755833.post-1144693445414166762006-04-10T13:24:00.000-05:002006-04-10T13:24:00.000-05:00what about wealthy suburban upper-middle-class afr...what about wealthy suburban upper-middle-class african americans who, despite being more privileged than some of their more qualified white classmates, gain admission to ivy league schools...while their lower-middle-class white classmates (who scored 300 points higher on their SATs) are waitlisted or rejected?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10755833.post-1144541796446766882006-04-08T19:16:00.000-05:002006-04-08T19:16:00.000-05:00I agree 110%. I have found the people that complain are usually mediocre at best. When I was an undergrad at Prestigious Eastern U (PU), there was a lot of yack about minorities and special privileges, while Bunny and Buffy Choate-Rosemary Hall walked around like their shit didn't stink. But no one ever thinks twice about class and privilege (i.e. legacies), which is the tack I take with my recalcitrant students when teaching Affirmative Action, the classic hot button issue.

Before I have to sit through their ignorance and media-fed fear factors, I pose a series of questions to them: Why is inheriting money and the privilege that goes along with it OK, but not racial Affirmative Action? Is the rich kid more deserving? It's not like he or she earned it or anything! They're smarter? Really? How do you know? What are the material reasons for this purported smarterness? Why would we be more interested in focusing on race and not money in this controversy? Why is it OK to give certain people (with money) the benefits of education, access, and power and not others (regardless of reason: hair colour, music preference, race, gender, region, whatever)? Is this fair? Has your life been "fair"? If not, why not? Are you to blame for this lack of fairness? If yes, how? If not, who is to blame then?

This usually gives them a nice, rich pause, but it gets a better response now that I am teaching at nothing-special public U versus my job before, at stuck-up private Sadistic College. Oh, it also helps to preface everything by telling them meritocracy is bullshit. No one said Miss Girl was an expert in subtlety.Oso Rarohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11345231159759787852noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10755833.post-1142367229719090452006-03-14T14:13:00.000-06:002006-03-14T14:13:00.000-06:00Gah. I had a GREAT GPA (finished in the top 10 of my class) and an amazingly good ACT score (2nd highest in my class). Not only was I not given a scholarship to Tulane, I wasn't even accepted.
The next year, our high school produced one of the top 10 college football picks in the country. It took him 8 tries to score a 17 on his ACT (8 tries. Yes. 8 to make the lowest acceptable score).
